The fact that makes this work
Here is the elegant part, and the reason face value is a valid shortcut at all.
US 90% silver coinage was struck to a constant weight per unit of face value. That means $1 of face value contains the same amount of silver regardless of which coins make it up:

All three land on 0.7234 troy ounces. This was deliberate: the coinage was money backed by metal, so a dollar of face value had to mean a dollar's worth of silver whatever form it took.
The practical consequence is that you do not need to sort a mixed bag by denomination. Add up the face value and multiply. A jar holding $18.35 in mixed pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves contains 18.35 × 0.7234 = 13.27 troy ounces of silver, worth $881.15.
Why 0.715 and 0.7234 are both correct
Every junk silver calculator offers two multipliers, and almost none explain the difference. It is simple, and it matters at volume.
0.7234 is the theoretical figure — the silver content of newly struck, uncirculated coins, calculated straight from the mint specification.
0.715 is the trade figure — the same calculation with an allowance for circulation wear. These coins spent decades in pockets, tills and vending machines, and every year of handling abraded away a trace of metal. 0.715 is 98.8% of 0.7234, an industry convention representing the average loss on well-circulated coins.
Which should you use?
- Buying or selling at volume? Expect the counterparty to use 0.715. It is the standard for bulk trading and is the more honest figure for genuinely worn coins.
- Coins are nearly uncirculated? 0.7234 is closer to the truth.
- Estimating your own holding? Use 0.715 to avoid disappointment. The difference on $100 face is about $55.76 — small on a jar, real on a bag.
A "bag" in the trade means $1,000 face value, which is roughly 715 troy ounces at the trade multiplier — worth $47,462 at today's price.
Which coins count
90% silver (the standard junk silver):
- Dimes — Mercury (1916–1945) and Roosevelt (1946–1964)
- Quarters — Washington (1932–1964), plus earlier Standing Liberty and Barber
- Half dollars — Kennedy 1964 only, Franklin (1948–1963), Walking Liberty

40% silver (a separate category, worth less):
- Kennedy half dollars 1965–1970 are 40% silver, holding 0.14789 troy oz each — worth $9.82, well under half a 90% half dollar. Do not mix them into a 90% count. See silver half dollar value.
35% silver:
- War nickels, 1942–1945, identifiable by a large mintmark above Monticello. 0.05626 troy oz each. See war nickel value.
No silver at all:
- Anything dated 1965 or later, except the 40% Kennedys above and modern silver proof or bullion issues. The 1965 changeover was the point at which circulating US coinage stopped containing silver.
How to tell silver from clad in ten seconds
You do not need to check dates one at a time.
Look at the edge. This is the fastest test by a wide margin. A 90% silver coin shows a solid silver-white edge. A modern clad coin shows a copper stripe sandwiched between two white layers. Stack a handful on their side and the copper ones announce themselves instantly.
Listen. Dropped on a hard surface, 90% silver rings with a longer, higher tone. Clad thuds. Coin dealers sort by ear faster than most people sort by eye.
Check the date. Definitive, but slowest — and worn dates are common on exactly the coins you most want to find.
Weigh it. A silver quarter is 6.25 g; a clad quarter is 5.67 g. On a 0.1 g scale the difference is unmistakable.

What buyers actually pay
Junk silver trades closer to melt than almost any other form of scrap, because it needs no assay — the coin is the certification. A buyer can verify it by date and edge in seconds.
Expect dealers to pay near melt, sometimes slightly above when retail demand is strong, since junk silver is popular with small buyers and dealers need inventory. That is unusual: for most scrap the gap is much wider.
Two cautions. Do not melt or damage anything before selling — the coin form is what makes it easy to trade. And check for key dates first. A 1916-D Mercury dime, a 1932-D or 1932-S Washington quarter, or any early Standing Liberty in decent condition can be worth many multiples of its silver content. Running a whole jar through a calculator and selling it as bulk metal is how those get lost.
Melt value here is a ceiling, not an offer — though for junk silver specifically, the gap is often narrow.
